In September 2026, documentation began circulating online showing Molnya-2 loitering munitions downed somewhere in central Mali, either in the Segou region or near Dioura, in the Mopti region. These incidents coincide with growing Russian UAV activity during counterinsurgency operations in the country, which to date has involved the use of Geran-2 KK-series, ZALA KUB, and ZALA Lancet X-wing loitering munitions. The diversification of UAVs deployed by Russian Africa Corps personnel reflects the manifold tactical challenges presented by the JNIM-FLA insurgency and outflow of technological solutions from the Russo-Ukrainian war to the Sahelian theater.
