TGA0905 – UPM Limpet Mines Adapted for Use as Payloads on Russian UAVs

On October 4, 2026, documentation showing two UPM limpet mines reportedly discovered by Ukrainian forces in Kharkiv Oblast, northeastern Ukraine, was shared in a Ukrainian Telegram group. The accompanying post claimed the mines had separated from a UAV identified as a Geran-series shortly after Ukrainian forces shot it down. Earlier reporting had linked UPM mines to an Italmas UAV in September 2026.

The reporting suggests Soviet-era UPM mines are being repurposed as UAV payloads. The available evidence does not establish whether the October 4 incident involved deliberate mine dispersal or payload separation following the UAV’s interception, nor whether this represents a broader deployment practice.
