Between July and October 2026, footage began circulating on Ukrainian military-related Telegram channels showing the launch of loitering munitions attached to aerostats. Meanwhile, Russian military-related channels published footage demonstrating the interception of Ukrainian aerostats carrying FPV racing drone-based loitering munitions. During the same period, multiple alerts reported the use of balloons and aerostats to deliver fixed-wing loitering munitions from Ukraine into Russia, with reports indicating an intensification of Ukrainian balloon-based attacks.

These developments point to an intensification of the previously reported use of aerostats as launch and delivery platforms for unmanned systems, alongside their established roles in communications, reconnaissance, and air-defense support. Because of their low signature, aerostats can be more difficult to detect and intercept, while also extending UAV range and reducing fuel consumption. When equipped with signal relays, they can help maintain communications with drones operating at greater distances.
