TGA0892 – First Clear Footage of Geran-2 Loitering Munition in Mali

In July 2026, clear documentation confirmed the presence of a Geran-2 loitering munition near the Mali-Algeria border settlement of Talahandak and its use therein by the Kremlin-backed Africa Corps private military contractors. Russian PMCs have previously deployed the Geran-2 KK-series and ZALA KUB loitering munitions in Mali, with this latest incident underscoring the continued expansion of Russian-manufactured UAV capabilities in the country. This development likewise highlights the importance placed on the Sahelian theater by the Russian government given its willingness to allocate state-manufactured equipment as the Russo-Ukraine conflict continues. By targeting fuel and supply truck depots along these remote northern border zones, the Russia-backed Malian forces aim to sever critical logistical lifelines moving southward. In destroying these staging areas, they hope to disrupt the offensive of the coalition formed by the Front for the Liberation of Azawad and Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wa al-Muslimeen against key garrisons along the Niger River bend and Kidal-Gao axis.
