Following the fall of the Assad regime, the newly formed Syrian Army under Ahmad al-Sharaa integrated tens of thousands of unvetted former opposition fighters and foreign jihadists into official military structures, such as the 82nd Division containing former members of Ansar al-Tawhid. While this strategy may have prevented these combatants from joining new insurgent groups, it has created other security risks. Minimal vetting of these battle-hardened combatants has led to documented sectarian massacres against minority populations and rogue insider attacks on foreign forces. Furthermore, operational and media links persist between integrated units and extremist networks. Specifically, the online platform Al-Tawwaq Media functions as a propaganda wing tied to with Ansar al-Tawhid elements within the 82nd Division, actively disseminating and glorying suicide bombing content, Jund al-Aqsa legacy material, and speeches by Osama bin Laden.
