Between February 7 and mid‑February 2026, multiple incidents of suspected sabotage targeted Italian rail infrastructure during the opening phase of the Milano–Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. Rudimentary incendiary devices were used to damage signalling, data transmission, and switching-related cables on key rail corridors. At least one device reportedly failed to initiate and was recovered for forensic exploitation.
The February 2026 IID attacks coincided with anti‑Olympics protests in Milan and were followed by the circulation of anarchist claims framing the sabotage as a deliberate escalation from legal protest toward clandestine sabotage. The claims explicitly referenced similar rail sabotage in France during the Paris 2024 Olympics and situate the attacks within broader opposition to security decrees and “red zone” policing.
