During January and February 2026, 3D-printed casings designed to house initiation systems and dedicated power sources have been documented in use with improvised loitering munitions. Open-source material shared in Russian combat engineering Telegram channels suggests these devices are being employed by Russian forces.
Although Russian forces frequently use limit switches as improvised impact fuzes for loitering munitions, the recently-observed configurations are not simple switch mechanisms. Instead, they consist of self-contained initiation modules with power supplies isolated from the UAV’s primary battery system. This configuration ensures the UAV and initiation system operate on independent power circuits.
While separately powered initiation systems have been documented previously on the battlefield, the specific designs and TTPs now being circulated in Russian Telegram combat engineering channels indicate a refinement in modularization and redundancy. This development has implications for EOD response and should be considered during the neutralization of IEDs.
