Mobius report 6/2026 – IEDs Placed Next to Separatist Banners, Narathiwat, Southern Thailand

February 1, 20261 min readTerrogence Intelligence Team

On January 22, 2026, an IED was discovered near banners calling for the independence of the historical Patani region. The IED consisted of a PVC pipe, a standard electric detonator, a digital timer initiation system, and an explosive charge assessed to be Pentolite. All components of the device differ substantially from those typically observed in IEDs in southern Thailand. In addition, the tactic employed – use of a time-delay IED emplaced near provocative banners, rather than a device intended to be victim-operated against individuals approaching the banners – represents a departure from previously documented patterns in the region.
