February 1, 20261 min readTerrogence Intelligence Team

On January 6, 2026, the armed forces of Syria’s new regime, led by Ahmad al-Sharaa, launched a military operation to seize control of the northern Kurdish neighborhoods of Aleppo, in northern Syria, specifically Al-Ashrafiyah and Al-Sheikh Maqsoud, from militants from the Kurdish-majority Syrian Democratic Forces. Later in January 2026, the Syrian Army expanded the operation eastward across Aleppo Governorate and toward Raqqa, Deir al-Zour, and Al-Hasakah governorates. Alongside ongoing reporting on the Syrian Army’s advances across these four governorates, documentation was circulated showing IEDs and weapons used by SDF militants that were neutralized and seized in areas captured by government forces. Most of the weapons, IEDs and initiation systems documented had previously been observed in SDF use; however, some items also displayed characteristics suggesting they were likely seized from Islamic State militants.
