On August 25, 2025, the Federal Security Service of the Russian Federation claimed it had thwarted a terrorist attack in Crimea (annexed by Russia in 2014), allegedly planned by the Security Service of Ukraine and targeting FSB personnel.
A 54-year-old Russian woman from the Volgograd region, in southern Russia, was arrested while attempting to deliver an Orthodox icon concealing an IED to a local FSB checkpoint in Simferopol. She was detained before the device could be activated.
The IED, which was sophisticatedly disguised, contained approximately 1 kg of plastic explosive and a long-range RC receiver with a SIM card for cellular communication.
Over the past year, several attempts to smuggle IEDs into Russia for attacks of varying scales have been documented. These devices are often marked by advanced concealment techniques, with some intended for assassinations and others for strikes against strategic facilities.
