Mobius report 60/2025 – Magnetically-Attached IEDs, Pakistan

August 1, 20251 min readTerrogence Intelligence Team

On July 14, 2025, the Baloch Liberation Army carried out a targeted assassination of Pakistan Army Major Anwar Kakar in Quetta. A motorcyclist attached a magnetic IED to his vehicle while in transit, which initiated shortly afterward. Just over a year earlier, on May 3, 2024, a similar attack claimed the life of Maulana Muhammad Siddique Mengal, a journalist and president of the Khuzdar Press Club, when a motorcyclist planted a magnetic IED on his car while in transit, killing him and injuring several bystanders. This “magnetic IED on the move” TTP appears to be gaining traction for militants operating in Pakistan, repeatedly employed to target and eliminate high-profile public and military figures, in addition to sticky IEDs attached to the undercarriages of vehicles. The continued use of magnetically-attached IEDs as a TTP in Pakistan in targeted assassinations demonstrates the enduring effectiveness of the strategy and the ongoing threat it poses to prominent individuals across the region.
