On the afternoon of July 8, 2025, an FPV drone-based improvised loitering munition, allegedly operated by the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, was discovered on the Coxquihui-Oriente Medio Día highway, near the Valparaíso ranch, in Coxquihui municipality, Veracruz. According to reports, the drone failed to initiate after hitting the side of the road. It was reported by civilians on a bus adjacent to the scene – possibly the target of the attack.
The documentation shows a fully intact custom-built FPV drone on the ground, with an improvised contact fuse, a flashing LED light and a visible improvised explosive payload attached.
This is the first verified use of an FPV drone-based improvised loitering munition in Mexico.
Though the payload did not function, the evidence demonstrates an escalating operational capability by the CJNG to field FPV drone-based improvised loitering munitions akin to those used in asymmetric warfare in Ukraine and Syria.
