July 1, 20251 min readTerrogence Intelligence Team

On June 24, 2025, two Barisan Revolusi Nasional militants were arrested at a police checkpoint set up in Phang Nga Province, Phuket, southern Thailand, after a digital timer-based IED initiation system was discovered in their vehicle. During their interrogation, the two confessed to planting four IEDs across Phuket, including one concealed in a motorcycle parked at Phuket International Airport.

In the following days, local security forces worked to locate and neutralize the IEDs while continuing the investigation and making additional arrests.

During the operation to thwart this BRN attack, eight additional IEDs were discovered in the neighboring provinces of Krabi and Phang Nga, all of which were successfully neutralized. While the BRN attack failed tactically, it achieved a degree of psychological and media impact. The event received significant media coverage due to the fact that BRN militants managed to operate beyond their usual area of activity in southern Thailand, specifically targeting prominent tourist sites, and were only apprehended after they had planted a substantial number of IEDs.
