Since December 2024, Colombia has experienced three VBIED attacks targeting toll plazas in northern Colombia. All of the toll plazas were located either on or very close to border crossings with Venezuela, and caused significant destruction, multiple casualties, and operational disruptions along key transportation corridors. The targeting of toll plazas – facilities with limited security but high visibility and economic significance – reflects a calculated strategy.
