Over the past three years, we have seen an increasing use of large UAVs in Ecuador, the most common being various multirotors intended mainly for agricultural purposes. These UAVs are used by criminal organizations primarily for the purposes of transferring weapons and drugs, but also in armed UAV attacks. On September 12, 2023, an agricultural UAV was discovered on the roof of the La Roca maximum security prison in Guayaquil with a large container attached to it, the contents of which are unknown. During the handling of the incident by bomb disposal technicians, a violent explosion occurred that caused significant damage, mainly to the roof of the prison. No injuries were reported in the incident because the prisoners had been evacuated beforehand to an adjacent penitentiary.
