On July 9, 2023, Kenyan and Somali forces killed over 30 Al-Shabaab militants in Weel-Maarow village, in the Lower Jubba region, in Somalia, near the Kenya-Somalia border. They seized a minibus filled with a substantial quantity of explosive materials, IED casings, and other components used to prepare IEDs, intended for use in attacks. Al-Shabaab, a militant group primarily based in Somalia, has significantly expanded its operations and presence in Kenya. Furthermore, the group uses similar IEDs in both Somalia and Kenya, indicating a shared modus operandi between the two locations.
