In March 2023, five envelopes with pen drives concealing IEDs were sent to five journalists working at TV and radio stations in Guayaquil and Quito, in Ecuador. One of the VOIEDs partially initiated on March 20, 2023, when the targeted journalist plugged it into the USB port on his computer. He was slightly injured. In the other cases, the journalists either opted not to plug in the pen drive, or plugged it in incorrectly, or it failed to initiate for other reasons.
