On July 24, 2022, the General Directorate of Intelligence of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan arrested a four-member terrorist cell of the Islamic State – Khurasan Province. The group confessed to involvement in past attacks and a large cache of IEDs, weapons and additional items were recovered from their possession.

An assortment of IEDs was recovered after the arrests, including different kinds of PBIEDs, a variety of RC initiation systems, IED components, ammunition and assorted firearms.

The recent operations by the GDI reflect the Taliban’s upscaled efforts to consolidate its government in Afghanistan, which was established with the fall of Kabul in mid-August 2021. Special focus was given to ISKP, its main contender, which in the passing year, has escalated jihadi activity to challenge the veteran organization.
