On December 1, 2021, a smartphone box placed on a sidewalk on the Al-Hasakah road, in Ras al-Ayn, was found by security forces. Although it appeared innocent at first, it actually concealed an IED. The item was a victim-operated IED (VOIED) incorporating a micro switch for initiation upon opening the box. The IED was later neutralized by security forces.
Concealing IEDs inside innocent items, as well as using a micro switch for booby-trapping an IED, is a common TTP among terrorists in various arenas, and is usually successful, whether there is a specific target or not.
Yet, the vigilance of security forces vis-à-vis the innocent item that turned out to be an IED is not presupposed, and likely stems from extensive experience in encountering similar booby-trapped IEDs concealed as innocent objects in the Syrian arena.
